The municipality of Elche, or Elx in Valencian, is located to the south of the city of Alicante and just 20 minutes from the Mediterranean coast.

It is a city of surprises, with an oasis of palm trees declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, fortresses, Arab baths, convents, basilicas and mosques.

Its more than 230,000 inhabitants make it the most populated city in the Valencian Community, behind Valencia and Alicante and surpassing the city of Castellón.

If you are in Elche, there are a few things that are close to the city that you can't miss:

• Santa Pola, a town just half an hour from Elche with beautiful beaches and famous for its salt mines, port and historical remains.
• Tabarca Island, just 8 kilometres from Santa Pola.
• The historic centre of Orihuela.
• The capital of the province, the city of Alicante, just half an hour away.
• The town of Elda, a municipality located next to the Vinalopó river, famous for its Bronze Age archaeological sites.
• La Alcudia Archaeological Park, an Iberian archaeological site and home to the bust of the Lady of Elche.
• Paraje Natural Municipal del Clot de Galvany, a wetland with hills inhabited by numerous species of birds. It is ideal for visiting with children and hiking.

Elche has a wide coastline of 9 kilometres, full of ideal beaches to spend the day. We recommend

• Arenales del Sol beach, famous for having the warmest waters on the coast and which connects with the natural area of Clot de Galvany.
• El Altet beach, a rustic beach, away from the hustle and bustle.
• Playa del Carabassi, located just after the beach mentioned above. It is a small sandy area escorted by wooden walkways.
• El Pinet beach and La Marina beach, located continuously to the south of Santa Pola, sheltered among pine trees.

• Stroll through the centre of Elche: The first thing you should visit is the centre and stroll through its streets. In the centre, you will find the Plaza de la Glorieta, where you can see a replica of the famous Lady of Elche and an angel that represents the Mystery of Elche, the drama that tells the story of the Ascension of the Virgin Mary.  A few minutes from this square, behind the Plaza de la Mercé, is the old convent of Santa Lucía, a sister building with a Renaissance façade, the Arab Baths on the foundations and the Calahorra tower on the façade. Also in the centre, near the Tower, is the Plaza de Santa Isabel with the statue of Las Tres Marías. And finally, although a little further away, is the bridge of Santa Teresa, the oldest bridge in Elche.

• Altamira Palace, or the Alcázar de la Señoría.
